Competere is among the signatories of the Joint Declaration on Reversing the Recent Tariff Escalation, promoted by the Global Trade and Innovation Policy Alliance (GTIPA).
The declaration issues a strong call for global policymakers to safeguard an open, rules-based, innovative global trade system.
Over the past decades, trade liberalization has played a key role in driving global economic growth, reducing poverty, and boosting innovation. Since the establishment of the World Trade Organization (WTO), income per capita in low- and middle-income countries has almost tripled, with around one-third of this growth attributed to trade openness. Meanwhile, extreme poverty has sharply declined, and developing countries’ share in global exports has doubled.
However, today’s rise in trade tensions and tariff escalation threatens to reverse these achievements, creating uncertainty and slowing development, particularly for emerging economies.
The Joint Declaration urges policymakers to:
- Target mercantilist practices, not economies that respect international trade rules;
- Address specific market distortions without resorting to blanket tariffs;
- Expand and modernize the global network of trade agreements, supporting initiatives like the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) and advancing the Information Technology Agreement (ITA);
- Promote stability and predictability in economic policies to encourage innovation and investment;
- Rethink globalization, building a new system based on fair, rules-based collaboration among market-driven economies.
By signing the Declaration, Competere reaffirms its commitment to promoting free, fair, and innovation-driven trade worldwide.
