Competere presents the first commodities reports analysing incoming palm oil in the EU-27 countries and Italy. 


Palm oil is entering Europe at full steam amid the shortage of Ukrainian sunflower oil and the drought harming soy productivity in the Americas.

  • Despite commercial boycotting, palm oil has unflaggingly entered Europe to be heavily used in the food, cosmetics, and chemical sectors.

The import dynamics show extraordinary resilience of the palm oil supply chain with impressive rising stars among producing countries, as seen in the latest competitor reports released today. 

New reports study incoming palm oil to EU-27 countries and Italy over the period 2015-2022, with focus on key producing countries (Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand) and rising stars (Colombia, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nigeria, and Papua NG).

 

EU-27

Imports from Thailand, Nigeria, Honduras, Papua New Guinea, and Ecuador have been less-steady over time than those from Indonesia, Malaysia, Colombia, and Guatemala.

  • GuatemalaNigeria, and Ecuador are the only countries to have seen their exports to the EU increase from 2020 to 2021, despite the crisis brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • In 2021, Guatemala and Papua New Guinea overtook Indonesia as the second- and third-largest supplier of edible palm oil after Malaysia.

ITALY

Italy is a gold mine for palm oil rising stars.

  • Indonesia, Malaysia, Guatemala, and Colombia are the top four exporters of palm oil to Italy 
  • Italy’s mix of suppliers has been diversifying as Latin American partners have increased exports.
  • GuatemalaHonduras, and Nigeria have seen their exports to Italy increase from 2020 to 2021.
  • In 2020, Guatemala and Colombia overtook Indonesia as the second- and third-largest supplier of edible palm oil after Malaysia.
