Public Health Policies: From “One Size Fits All” to Personalised NutritionEUROPEAN PARLIAMENT, 24 JUNE
Ahead of the Fourth High-Level Meeting (HLM4) of the UN General Assembly on the prevention and control of NCDs and the promotion of mental health and wellbeing, we brought this conversation to the heart of Europe .
Prescriptive policies – taxes on specific foods, mandatory reformulation, and alarmist front-of-pack labels – are often presented as quick fixes to address obesity and non-communicable diseases. Yet growing evidence shows they fall short of real impact. Even worse, they overlook the complexity of human behavior, the diversity of our diets, and the importance of personal agency.
Obesity and NCDs are multifactorial conditions , shaped by a wide range of biological, environmental, social, and economic determinants. Tackling them requires more than simplistic, top-down interventions. What we need is a holistic, integrated and personalised approach – one that recognises the full complexity of these challenges and supports individuals in pursuing balanced lifestyles through informed, conscious choices.
On June 24th , we gathered at the European Parliament to discuss an alternative path. The event, hosted by MEP Letizia Moratti, featured interventions from leading professors and experts in the field, followed by an open debate with policymakers on how to promote effective, science-based, and people-centered strategies.
We highlighted our belief that real change starts with education and is powered by technology. Today, precision nutrition allows us to adapt healthy choices to individual needs, habits, environments, and traditions. From AI to wearables, we now have the tools to help people monitor their nutrition, activity, and overall wellbeing in real time – empowering them to adopt and maintain equilibrated lifestyles , not just modify their diets.
It’s time to move beyond outdated, one-size-fits-all approaches. Let’s stop placing the burden on consumers through ineffective restrictions and instead empower them with knowledge, balance, and freedom of choice. Let’s put people at the center of the response to obesity and NCDs.
