The Opportunity of the EUDR for Palm OilEMBASSY OF MALAYSIA IN BRUSSELS
Brussels, 7 October 2025
We had the privilege to take part in a high-level roundtable in Brussels, organized by the Embassy of Malaysia together with UKM University and the Malaysian Palm Oil CertificationCouncil (MSPO). The discussions, titled “Aligning Palm Oil with Global Sustainability and ESG Frameworks” focused on palm oil, sustainability, and ESG. Pietro Paganini intervened in both panels, highlighting how the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) can represent not only a challenge but also a strategic opportunity for the palm oil sector.
Palm Oil’s Strategic Role
Palm oil remains the most efficient oil crop, with the highest yield per hectare, year-round harvesting, excellent versatility for the food and cosmetic industries, and historically competitive prices compared to other oils.
Despite this, and despite its strong sustainability record, it continues to face disproportionate scrutiny. Producing over 70 million metric tonnes annually, palm oil is often boycotted and unfairly targeted by NGOs when compared to less efficient alternatives. No other crop matches its productivity and efficiency — which is why it should be recognised as best in class, rather than vilified.

EUDR: Challenges and Opportunities
European regulations, and in particular the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) presents some significant challenges. Some provisions are poorly drafted, but they also create a unique opportunity to push the sector to demonstrate transparency and communicate its sustainability achievements more effectively to consumers.
The palm oil sector is already ahead of the curve on traceability and sustainability compared to other commodities, which puts it in a strong position to comply with the EUDR. Rather than resisting, the industry can leverage the regulation as a platform to showcase its commitment to sustainable practices and strengthen its global reputation.
A continued Dialogue
The roundtable reaffirmed the importance of continuous dialogue between Malaysia and the EU. Palm oil is not the problem — it is part of the solution for building a more sustainable, efficient, and secure global food system.
