Longevity: Policies and Strategies to Live LongerBY MICHELE CARRUBA & PIETRO PAGANINI
Obesity is the silent pandemic of our time: it weighs heavily on people’s lives, the economy, and their freedom of choice. With the new book “Obesity. Instructions for Rebellion: The Mediterranean Way to Regain Balance, Health and Freedom of Choice”, we clearly explain the true causes of the problem and propose public, corporate, and personal policies and strategies to restore balance – also thanks to the new opportunities offered by technological innovation.
THE SILENT PANDEMIC
Why did Hon. Letizia Moratti, former mayor of Milan, choose to write the preface to our book? Because obesity is much more than a weight problem: it is the main gateway to non-communicable chronic diseases (NCDs), among the leading causes of death worldwide.
It is a phenomenon that generates enormous costs for healthcare systems, reduces productivity in companies, undermines the quality of daily life, and fuels stigma and discrimination that isolate millions of people. Around this condition also thrives a multi-billion-dollar industry of miracle diets, nutrition gurus, and false promises that, instead of solving the problem, worsen it by feeding frustration and misinformation.
DISMANTLING FALSE MYTHS AND “ONE SIZE FITS ALL” POLICIES
In the book, we dismantle the myths of public policies and strategies that have failed and that, despite clear evidence of their ineffectiveness, continue to be invoked as solutions: the sugar tax, which penalizes the weakest without reducing obesity rates; simplified labels, which create the illusion of providing information but in reality cause confusion; forced recipe reformulations, which distort food culture; the demonization of beverages such as beer and wine and of entire categories of nutrients like fats; and the contemporary obsession with proteins, especially plant-based ones, presented as a universal cure-all.
These are “one size fits all” policies and trends that ignore the complexity of the person – their individual needs and the social and environmental contexts in which they live – and end up diverting attention from the real tools of prevention and education.
REDISCOVERING MEDITERRANEAN BALANCE THROUGH TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATION
The central message we propose is simple yet revolutionary: obesity is a loss of balance between body, mind, and relationships. The way out is not yet another trendy diet or ideological shortcut, but a new lifestyle capable of combining tradition and innovation.
In the book, we explain in an accessible way the deep causes of obesity, its individual, social, and economic consequences, and guide the reader to understand why regaining balance is essential.
The theory of the 3Ms – Movement, Mind, Mindful Meals – represents the compass for daily life. And today, thanks to artificial intelligence and new technologies, this balance can truly become personalized: unique, tailor-made paths for each individual, capable of preventing obesity, improving health, and restoring freedom of choice.
A CALL TO ACTION
Rebelling against obesity means rebelling against a system that limits individual freedom and impoverishes society. It means putting knowledge, responsibility, and awareness back at the center – to build healthier and more inclusive communities. It means rethinking cities, schools, companies, and public policies so that they make it easier – and more desirable – to live well, in balance, and longer.
Only in this way can we transform the silent pandemic into an opportunity for real change: for people’s health, for economic prosperity, and for the freedom of choice that lies at the heart of a balanced and vital society.
