Lucy Lands in BrusselsBOOK PRESENTATION "IN LUCY’S FOOTSTEPS. AN EVOLUTIONARY JOURNEY"

8 April 2026, European Parliament

After Rome, Lucy landed in Brussels to guide us on a journey across the ages. At the European Parliament, we hosted — in partnership with Carni Sostenibili — the presentation of the book “In Lucy’s Footsteps: An Evolutionary Journey. How Food Made Us Human. The Virtues and Value of Animal Protein” (Guerini e Associati), edited by Pietro Paganini in collaboration with Carola Macagno, with scientific contributions by Elisabetta Bernardi and Giuseppe Pulina.

Scientific yet accessible, the book challenges misconceptions and common stereotypes, helping readers better understand the role of meat today – from nutrition and sustainability to modern lifestyles.

The discussion focused on the role of animal protein in human evolution, its nutritional and social value, and its importance in preserving the increasingly fragile relationship between humans, food, and the environment. Alongside the author Pietro Paganini, the panel featured Dr. Elisabetta Bernardi — nutrition biologist, specialist in food science, and lecturer in Nutrition Biology at the University of Bari — as well as Members of the European Parliament Stefano Cavedagna, Benoît Cassart, Carmen Crespo Díaz, and Dario Nardella. The debate was moderated by environmental journalist Andrea Bertaglio.

Key Takeaways

  • A driver of human evolution: Meat consumption supported brain growth, upright posture, language, and social development — shaping human civilization.
  • Nutrient density matters: Animal proteins deliver essential nutrients — including bioavailable iron, vitamin B12, zinc, and all essential amino acids.
  • Measured environmental progress: EU agri-food systems cut greenhouse gas emissions by over 18% (1990–2021)through innovation and efficiency.
  • Beyond emissions: Livestock systems also contribute to carbon sequestration and ecosystem services, requiring a net-impact perspective.
