Lucy Lands in Spain: Science, Nutrition, and Evolution Take the StageVALENCIA, SCIENCE, HEALTH AND FLAVOR: THE ANIMAL PROTEIN MISSION
Spain, 6 February 2026
On 6 February 2026, Spain welcomed a new scientific conversation as Pietro Paganini presented his latest book In Lucy’s Footsteps: An Evolutionary Journey during the event «Ciencia, salud y sabor: misión proteína animal» in Valencia, hosted by Universidad CEU Cardenal Herrera.
Following Our Origins Through Food
The book examines how meat—and animal proteins more broadly—have shaped human evolution, cognition, and social development. Guided by the symbolic figure of our earliest ancestor, the narrative connects scientific evidence, historical insight, and current dietary debates in a clear and accessible way.

Diet and Human Development
What we eat influences how we grow, think, and live. Proteins are fundamental biological components, and animal proteins—complete and highly bioavailable—have long supported human development and societal progress. In a time marked by abundance and polarized opinions, the book calls for renewed balance and awareness in food choices.
Beyond “Good” vs. “Bad” Foods
Labeling foods as strictly “good” or “bad” is misleading. What matters is proportion, quality, variety, and individual needs. Humans have always relied on diverse diets, including animal proteins. The key principle is equilibrium: a balanced diet within a balanced lifestyle.
Sustainability and Production
Debates about meat’s environmental impact are often simplified. The book highlights how farmers are adopting regenerative and innovative practices that reduce emissions, limit waste, and protect ecosystems while maintaining high production standards.
Safety and Animal Welfare
European production systems follow some of the strictest food safety and animal-welfare standards globally. Traceability and rigorous controls make meat a safe product and part of a responsible supply chain.
The Mediterranean Perspective
Meat is not excluded from the Mediterranean dietary model. It is included in moderate amounts within a varied, seasonal, and balanced pattern where health derives from harmony among foods rather than restriction.
A Book for Readers, Media, and Decision-Makers
Clear, evidence-based, and accessible, In Lucy’s Footsteps aims to broaden understanding of nutrition, evolution, and sustainability, offering a scientifically grounded perspective for consumers, journalists, and policy makers alike.
The book is currently available in Italian in bookstores and online, with the English edition coming soon!
